According to the Olympics’ official website, the list includes the winners of the World Championships and the 2020 Olympics.

Boxing

Kazakhstan will be represented in boxing by Nazym Kyzaibai (50 kilograms). The 2014 and 2016 World Champion in the weight category up to 48 kilograms, Kyzaibai, fulfilled her dream of competing in the Olympic Games. The tournament in Paris will be her first Olympic competition.

Valentina Khalzova (75 kilograms) will also debut at the Games. Her achievements include the title of World Champion 2016 in the category of up to 69 kilograms, the bronze medal of the World Championship 2022 in the same category and the gold medal of the World Cup 2023 in the category of up to 75 kilograms.

Saken Bibossinov (51 kilograms) is another national team boxer who has participated in the Olympic Games. In 2021, he secured a bronze in Tokyo, winning in the category up to 52 kilograms. He is also the 2021 World Champion, the 2022 World Silver Medalist and the Bronze Medalist of the 2019 and 2021 World Championships.

Judo

In judo, Abiba Abuzhakynova (48 kilograms), the third-ranked in the world, will debut at the Games in Paris. Over the past two years, Abuzhakynova has won bronze at the World Championships in 2022 and 2024.

Experienced Olympic judoka Eldos Smetov (60 kilograms) won silver in the 60-kilogram category in Rio 2016. Five years later, in Tokyo, he won bronze. His collection includes gold at the 2015 World Championships and bronze at the 2019 and 2022 World Championships.

Gymnastics

Milad Karimi is a gymnast specializing in all-around categories. At the 2023 World Cup, he brought the first award to the Kazakhstan national team in 26 years, becoming the bronze medalist in floor exercises. Karimi also competed in the Tokyo Games.

Athletics

Norah Jeruto, a long-distance runner originally from Kenya, obtained the right to perform for the national team of Kazakhstan in January 2022. The same year, Jeruto brought her team gold at the World Championships, setting a championship record.

Fencing

Ruslan Kurbanov, representing Kazakhstan in fencing, became the first athlete from Kazakhstan to win the World Fencing Championship award at the 2023 World Championship. He also won a bronze medal in the skewer tournament. The 2024 Olympics will be the second in his career.

Greco-Roman wrestling

Aidos Sultangali (60 kilograms) has twice climbed the world championships podium in Greco-Roman wrestling. He became the bronze medalist of the 2018 and 2022 World Cups in the category of up to 60 kilograms. The Olympic Games in Paris will be his first, which he has been dreaming about for 15 years.

Demeu Zhadraev is another wrestler in the category of up to 71 kilograms. He was the silver medalist of the 2017 World Championship in his category. Zhadraev competed at the Tokyo Games in the category of up to 77 kilograms and obtained the right to compete in Paris.

Freestyle wrestling

Azamat Dauletbekov, a freestyle wrestler (86 kilograms), will compete in his first Olympic games in 2024. He was a Bronze Medalist at the World Championships in 2022 and 2023.

Elena Rybakina is the first Kazakh tennis player to be ranked in the world’s top 10. At the 2020 Games, She took fourth place. She won Wimbledon in 2022 and became a finalist at the Australian Open in 2023. At the moment, she is the fourth-ranked racket in the world.

Two days after his astonishing 60-point triple-double, Luka Dončić steps into a small room outside of the American Airlines Center’s home locker room and notices my laptop opened to his own teenaged highlights.

By now, Dončić’s emotional high from his most magnificent career performance to date has faded away. He’s long past the celebration of his game-tying shot that looked akin to coffee jitters on fast forward. Far removed from walking by a television as it compared him to all-time greats. Now, he seems wearier, more focused on an afternoon nap before his next game this evening than reliving the prior one.

His 60 points, 21 rebounds, and 10 assists against the New York Knicks — which included a miraculous game-tying shot, a historic comeback win in overtime, and the first 60-20 triple-double in league history — had become just another record in a career filled with them, as far back as he can remember.

That’s why one brief answer Dončić gave in his post-game press conference that evening stood out: his response to being asked the last time he had last scored 60 points at any level. Even though that total set his NBA career high, he had surely done it before, at some point in his career, with everything he had accomplished.

Right?

“Never,” he said.

Now, with Dončić standing in this small room typically reserved for pregame chapel, I ask him about his previous personal scoring best. It was a game that had happened more than a decade ago, one which old Slovenian coaches and longtime European scouts pointed to when asked to confirm if he had really never scored 60 before. Did he remember it?

Not well, he admits, but he did.

And with the highlights of a much younger him playing in the background of this room, he makes an observation.

“It’s mostly the same way I play right now,” he says.

Among all the records Dončić broke that evening, there was still one more: the most he has ever scored in any game of his career. It was a 54-point performance he had at age 13, a personal best that lasted almost 11 years.

It happened at an international under-13 tournament called the Torneo Lido di Roma, or the Shores of Rome Tournament. Although Dončić rarely played with his age group, his competition in this tournament was his peers.

Olimpija Ljubljana, Slovenia’s most prominent basketball club based in the country’s largest city and capital, has a system in which coaches work with youth players in three-year cycles. It just wasn’t one prepared for the prodigious Dončić. When he arrived for his first club practice at age 8, it took 16 minutes before he moved up to the under-12 team.

That’s how Jernej Smolnikar, the newly appointed coach of the under-13 team, had already become familiar with Dončić. He had just finished his cycle with the generation of boys born in 1996, where the 1999-born Dončić typically played. The Torneo Lido di Roma was Smolnikar’s first games with the new generation he had been assigned to, and Dončić joined them.

“This team (hadn’t) practiced a lot together,” says Jernej Smolnikar, who coached that team. “But (Dončić’s) dominance was at a very high level even at that time, so we had high ambitions to win.”

The tournament, a six-hour drive from Ljubljana, was hosted in the outskirts of Rome, With more family members than fans in the crowd. Smolnikar recalls how his players would gather around smartphones, which were just becoming ubiquitous, using online translators to work around language barriers they had with their Italian competitors.

“Italian and Slovenian, these are completely different (languages),” Smolnikar says. “I remember the kids, everyone had smartphones except for me. I still had this Nokia phone.”

The cultural differences made no difference when Dončić was on the court. Even different basketballs — Italian youth leagues featured a smaller ball than the Slovenians used at home — didn’t bother him. Dončić dominated throughout the 16-team tournament, and his 29 points and 15 rebounds in the semifinals set up a championship clash against Italy’s SS Lazio.

“The anticipation for Luka playing was getting bigger and bigger,” Smolnikar says. ”In the finals, everyone was rooting for him, the locals were rooting for him. He was like a star. In two days he became a star.”

That summer, months after the tournament, Dončić decided to move to Spain and join Real Madrid’s youth academy. The club had already expressed its interest in him, but Dončić and his family still weren’t sure if it was the right move to make so soon.

“I decided (at the) last moment,” Dončić told The Athletic last month, “because I didn’t even know if I wanted to know or not.”

Whether he knew it at the time or not, this championship game made it clear he was right to eventually join Real Madrid and begin the journey that led him to basketball stardom. Dončić led Olimpija Ljubljana to a 104-76 win in that final game and was named the tournament MVP. He finished with 54 points and, of course, a triple-double.

There’s a six-minute, 10-second video published on April 10, 2012, one day after Dončić’s championship performance, that shows every basket he made.

The 13-year-old Dončić doesn’t look exactly like he does now, of course. “I was a bit bigger than everyone there,” he says. He had already grown to 5-foot-11 with obvious physical advantages.

Yet the video shows a teenaged player that is still unmistakably Luka Dončić. He contorts around defenders to toss up soft floaters. He flings hook passes over his shoulder for catch-and-shoot jumpers. He tosses around-the-back dimes. He even dribbles through a defender’s legs in his own backcourt.

“What is truly amazing is that he scored this 54 with the same ease that he did the 60,” Smolnikar says. “If you look, Luka was playing very, very similar to the way he is now.”

When Dončić moved to Madrid soon after, he returned to facing players older than him. He began practicing with the senior team at age 15, made his Real Madrid debut one year later and started receiving attention from international scouts and, eventually, front-office higher-ups.

“(He had) a short youth career,” says Robert Carmenati, an Italian whom the Mavericks have long employed for Europe-based scouting. “Luka really played few (youth) games as a teenager.”

What seemed impossible — that Dončić had never before scored 60 — makes sense in this context. As Dončić puts it himself: “I was always playing with the older kids.” This Italian tournament, one that occurred more than a decade ago, might have been the only time in Dončić’s career where he actually faced players his age.

Matteo Garzia remembers this tournament he played in for another reason.

When Dončić was named MVP, Garzia was awarded the tournament’s most distinguished player. There was a photo taken of him and Dončić, each wearing their medals, the Slovenian towering over the 13-year-old Italian. Several years ago, Garzia stumbled across this very photo and posted it online with an ironic comparison of their respective careers. He wrote, in part:

Luka Doncic: 1 European Championship gold, 1 Euroleague, 3 Spain titles, 1 NBA rookie of the year, play for the Dallas Mavericks, averaging 29.3 points, 9.6 rebounds and 9 assists per game, his throwing percentage is 48%, just before he signs a 50 million deal with Jordan, he has 3.5 million followers on Instagram and is still a modest guy.

Matteo Garzia: 1 call to the regional team, 1 MVP of the Livor tournament, I play for the Alvisian youth team in Venice in the Serie D, averaging 10 points and 0 rebounds per game.. I get no pay, I paid $ 50 for a medical examination, I have a pair of Jordan shoes for which I paid $ 160. I have 732 followers on Instagram and I am still a humble guy.

Dončić didn’t remember Garzia when shown the photo. He’s grown taller and won far more prominent awards since they posed together. He’s old enough to tell television cameras that he needed a “recovery beer” — “An IPA,” he tells me, “Just one, and then I went to sleep” — after his 60-point performance last month.

Garzia says he still smiles whenever he’s asked about that photo. The highlight of his basketball journey might just be another almost forgotten record for Dončić in a career filled with them. But even though Garzia now cheers for Dončić through television screens and online streams, he likes to remember as the 13-year-old competitor he stood next as a peer.

“We were just two kids who loved playing basketball,” he writes in a text message. “I think that’s the real beauty of this incredible sport, these sliding doors that happen once or twice in a lifetime that will give you a memory that’ll last forever.”

Angel Reese’s first ever basketball coach, Jimmy Price has always been an unwavering support system in Reese’s life. She recently posted a picture of the two on Instagram, with the caption, “Happy Birthday to my first ever trainer! Love You Alwayssssss,” in the story.

Their relationship dates back to the time when Angel was in the eighth grade when he started training her to play better. Price has been a close friend of the Reese family for the past 20 years. He grew up playing basketball alongside Angel’s mother, Angel Webb. Webb relied on Price to guide her Angel and Julian towards basketball.

Seeing the skills possessed by Reese at such a young age, Price nicknamed her and gave her the moniker, ‘The Big Ticket’, stating the reason to Reese, “One day, people are gonna pay to watch you play.” It was like an affirmation from him as he had already seen what the world was realizing just now. Another piece of advice that he gave to Reese is to never show her back to her girly side as it can take her to places. As it turned out, today Angel is capitalizing on millions from her NIL deals.

As for Price, he runs a basketball training company called, ShotReadyElite. It is a company based in Baltimore that focuses on player development in the St. Frances area. Price has been like a father figure in Reese’s life. As her ‘big homie’, he flew out of Baton Rouge to Reese for a predraft workout with her.

The workout drew Reese and Price to a trip down memory lane as one night they were practicing from 9:30 to around 11. The next morning they came in even before the sun was up. It was just like the morning 5 a.m. and after-school workouts they had at St. Frances.

All these years, Price imparted priceless strategies and techniques to Reese. Let’s find out how he turned Reese into a mean machine on the court.

A true master observes and refines
“She was a fierce competitor. She’s always been like that. Dawg been in her since she was born. This is nothing new,” were Price’s words when he saw that blazing fire in Reese. As he has been working on Reese’s development from time to time, he knows very well her weak spots and places where she can make a huge impact with her play.

He put Reese into mid-post drills that included one dribble pull-up jump shots and the iconic ‘Jordan fadeaway’ or ‘Kobe baseline fadeaway’ in addition. He tweaked the first step she used to take on her downhill drives and her finishes around the basket. Undoubtedly, Reese has always been a remarkable athlete when it comes to rebounding offensive shots.

At LSU, Reese was always focused on the interior as there were multiple guards present on the team, however, now other parts of her game will be visible as well as Price puts it, “She’s gonna be a stretch-four in the league. She’s been playing out of position the last few years. Now, the fans will see her total game.”

Price has indeed come a long way in terms of Reese’s refinement as a player. When Reese was in the 10th grade, he noticed that Angel’s right arm was double-jointed. As a result, she couldn’t get her elbow fully tucked in. So, Price switched her jump shot from right to the left hand as they began the process from the beginning.

“When you transfer from one arm to the other, you have to build that muscle up. Thousands and thousands of shots. It’s still a work in progress. So she puts up shots daily. You wouldn’t even realize if I didn’t tell you,” said Price on this small yet significant transformation in Reese.

The precision and attention to detail is quite uncanny with Price as he takes close note of technicalities like if her left thumb is parallel to her eye or not, if her elbow tucks in properly or not. Moreover, they apply methods like setting up a chair just two feet in front of the basket and Reese would sit with the ball her hands, working her lower body into a lift and rising for a shot.

Then Reese would throw a series of attempts from the free throw line and would gradually slide the chair out beyond the 3-point line with increasing momentum and would fire a deep 3 out of the chair. It is uncommon to fix a jump shot from scratch, on top of that the switching hands move is a rare thing to practice.

Price had never left Angel’s side. He was always there all the way when she was in high school, to three days a week at Maryland, to periodical workouts at LSU. And it is visible the work that he has done in refining Reese’s game when he says, “She’s ready for the next level. She’s ready for the challenge because she knows she’s one of them now. And she’s been preparing for that since the eighth grade.”

And LeBron has constantly made sure to credit Savannah for his continued success. In a viral Instagram post in 2020, James wrote about his wife, “The real reason why I’m able to do what I do both on the floor and off it at a very high level!”

Long before that, during an interview, LeBron appreciated his wife for being by his side way before he became THE LeBron James. “Savannah was down when I was at my high school, no cameras, no lights. And she was there with me. You wouldn’t be talking to me right now if it weren’t for her.” And it is great to see that years later, Savannah is still standing at the tunnel, waiting for her husband after a tiring game.

151-0! The one-sided record for teams trying to come back from a 3-0 deficit in the playoffs speaks for itself. Therefore, going by the numbers, the Lakers somehow coming out on top three more times to eliminate the Nuggets seems impossible. However, LeBron James is no stranger to beating the odds and doing what has never been done before. Who can forget when faced by a similar situation in 2016, LeBron did the unthinkable by coming back from a 3-1 deficit against a 73-win Warriors team to lift the NBA Championship?

With that in mind, there is still hope among LakerNation that King James will dethrone the defending Champions this year. Meanwhile, LeBron is focused on taking things one step at a time, knowing what’s at stake. With that mindset, during the postgame presser, LeBron said, “It’s a one game series for us… Monday’s game is the most important game of the season for us.”

But for the Lakers to create history, they will need to be as efficient and energetic as they were tonight. Losing double digit leads in the second half, getting outrebounded by the Nuggets, giving up several second-chance points were some of the weaknesses the Lakers overcame tonight. And they need to continue the same in Denver on Monday, and then for the rest of the series.

Reese has faced a barrage of criticism over her stance when it comes to transgender athletes competing in female sports

New WNBA star Angel Reese has made a bold statement on social media just a week or so after she was drafted by the Chicago Sky.

There has been debate aplenty in the US over transgender athletes over recent years, and the conversation was reignited after Joe Biden’s administration confirmed new rules aimed at safeguarding LGBTQ+ students.

Though, the new rules did not include policy on schools handing out bans on transgender athletes competing against biological females.

Shortly after, new Chicago Sky star Reese posted on X with a simple and clear message that highlighted her position. She wrote: “Protect young women in sports!!!”

The post saw Reese double down on her stance as she prepares to start her WNBA career in just under two weeks.

Never-ending criticism
The 2023 college champion, formerly of LSU, has always been clear about her position on transgender athletes competing among biological females, and she has received plenty of criticism for her stance.

“I’ve been through so much,” Reese told reporters in the recent March Madness tournament.

“I’ve seen so much. I’ve been attacked so many times, death threats. I’ve been sexualized. I’ve been threatened. I’ve been so many things, and I’ve stood strong every single time.

“I just try to stand strong for my teammates because I don’t want them to see me down and not be there for them. I’m still a human. All this has happened since I won the national championship. I haven’t had peace since then.”
